Format: Paperback , 352pp
Edition Description: Simon & Schuster
Description (from the publisher):
Once a person leaves the mountain, they never come back, not really. They're lost forever. Nellie Clay married Hobbs Pritchard without even noticing he was a spell conjured into a man, a walking, talking ghost story. But her mama knew. She saw it in her tea leaves: death. Folks told Nellie to get off the mountain while she could, to go back home before it was too late. Hobbs wasn’t nothing but trouble. He’d even killed a man. No telling what else. That mountain was haunted, and soon enough, Nellie would feel it too. One way or another, Hobbs would get what was coming to him. The ghosts would see to that. . . .
Told in the stunning voices of five women whose lives are inextricably bound when a murder takes place in rural Depression-era North Carolina, Ann Hite’s unforgettable debut spans generations and conjures the best of Southern folk-lore—mystery, spirits, hoodoo, and the incomparable beauty of the Appalachian landscape.

Here's MY WOW POST
I'd pick this one up for the setting alone!
This looks amazing! The cover, the description, this book is going on my list. :)
Wow this book sure sounds interesting!
I agree - I can't wait to read this book. I like the cover you have pictured. There's another one shown on Goodreads that's kind of creepy!
This one sounds excellent. I love the idea of a ghost walking around as a man. Thanks for sharing this one with us today!
That's one I hadn't heard about--thanks for sharing!
Haven't heard of this one and I love a good ghost story.
Our WOW pick is at BookSake.
I'm so honored! I hope you will enjoy the read. Ann
Gwendolyn, your write-up is as beautiful as the novel. "Best seller" is echoing from the mountain top. I can't wait to see the movie. But then we'll miss out on Ann's great prose and the stunning voices of the women. But we'll still have great visuals!!
The cover shown here is the new cover. The other was too creepy for most taste. I love this cover and it truly tells the story of the book.
I am Ann's biggest fan...and her agent. I knew from the first paragraph of her first book, Beautiful Wreck, that she was a gifted writer. To find out she had five others on the cooling racks, almost ready to submit, I was ecstatic! I lost the manuscript for Ghost On Black Mountain on the LA freeway leaving the airport (I accidentally left it on top of my cousin’s car). I stopped 5 lanes of traffic and risked my life for that story. You can bet I am riding cloud nine with her! The next novel, The Barren Sign, takes place right up the road from where I live; Sapelo Island has its own family of haints and root doctors. If you have not been, you simply must. Get Ms. Francine, an 81 year old Geechee, to give you the tour. You will never forget it.
This story takes place not far from where we live. It sounds very true to the spirit and feeling of the area. A book I will have to look for. I will have to see if she will be doing signings anywhere close by.
I'll be at the Barnes and Noble in Asheville Sept 15 at 7pm. Hope you can come Librarypat.
